Traditional orchards
National lead organisation: TBD
Local lead organisations: Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity The Greensand Trust Bedfordshire & Luton Orchard Group
Traditional orchards are a new Biodiversity Action Plan habitat. They include a range of fruit and nut orchards which are managed in a low intensity way. The trees are generally planted less densely than in intensively managed orchards. Traditional orchards in the East of England, however, tend to be more densely planted, and are often grazed by geese or chickens rather than sheep or pigs.
Traditional orchards in Bedfordshire and LutonIn Bedfordshire, agricultural census data show a 95% decline in orchard area since the peak decade of the 1950s.
