Ponds are seasonal or permanent water bodies. They can be as small as 1 m2 or as large as 2 ha. Water is usually present for at least 4 months of the year, during which time it can be of any depth.
Ponds in Bedfordshire and LutonBedfordshire's ponds have been surveyed at 15-year intervals since 1976. Results show an overall loss of 4% of ponds in the sample area. However very little is known about pond turnover rate, in particular for seasonal ponds. In 2007 50% of ponds were found to be disappearing through habitat succession and other factors. Only one of several ponds surveyed in detail were found to be of high quality. As of may 2008 only one pond in Bedfordshire - Maulden Meadow Pond - is listed on the National Ponds Register.
